What is a RaySafe - Key Points

RaySafe is a state of the art, ultra-thin adhesive, which can be stuck to your phone, iPad or laptop, and is proven to reduce harmful EMF radiation using NiCu mesh technology.

The RaySafe sticker easily fits under any phone, iPad and laptop case that you may already have on your device.

Due to some confusion, we would like to reiterate that RaySafe is indeed an ultra-thin sticker, rather than a protective case. It will not add much protection against dropping or damaging your device, but it will effectively protect against EMF radaition.

When you get your RaySafe, you will receive a small panphlet containing instructions of how to apply your RaySafe to your device (shown to the right). The RaySafe should be applied by yourself or a family member. You can reapply the RaySafe you are unhappy with it's position.

RaySafe will not leave any marks on your phone after removal.

How RaySafe Stops EMF Radiation

We use a conductive NiCu mesh fabric which acts as a flexible Faraday cage to block EMF radiation. This is effective because the external electrical field, emitted from the phone, causes the electric charges within the conducting material to be distributed, such that they cancel the field's effect in our product, meaning the EMF radiation cannot reach you. This phenomenon is usually used to protect sensitive electronic equipment from external radio frequency interference (RFI), also known as EMF radiation.

Our phone model managed to block 77% of EMF radiation when tested at various phone usage levels, whilst our computer model blocks 94% of EMF radiation on average. Our computer design is specifically designed to protect those who work with their computer on their lap, but is useful for everyone. Our design ensures your phone's service and performance is not affected, while improving your phone's aesthetic.

RaySafe Journey and Development

We have developed our product a lot since the first prototype, improving the quality of our product, producing RaySafes for more phone models, and introducing new vinyl colours and patterns. We wanted to share our journey with you, from the very first RaySafe made, to our newest collection of clean-cut wood and marble

RaySafe NiCu Mesh, created in November 2017

We researched and found the Nickel Copper (NiCu) mesh, which creates a Faraday Cage that disperses out 77% of the EMF radiation on average. We ordered the material from China in bulk in order to save money, and cut it our initially using a laser cutter, but later using a vinyl cutter. We also decided to order some vinyl in order to put on top of the NiCu mesh, as you can see in the pictures

These RaySafes were made using our school’s laser cutter, which burnt the edges and left marks on our vinyl, making our product less aesthetically pleasing. We did our best to fix most of the products by cleaning them with a special stain-removing liquid, however we had to throw away some products. At this point, we had the iPhone 5/5s/SE, iPhone 6/6s, iPhone 6+, iPhone 7, and Samsung Galaxy S7 models, and we only had the matte black.

RaySafe Phone v2, created in December 2018

These RaySafes were made using our very own vinyl cutter, which we brought with money we had made from fundraising and sales. As you can see from the sharp, clear cut edges, and the lack of dirt, the vinyl cutter massively improved the quality of our product. We also added the iPhone 7+ and the Google Pixel 1 to the collection of models that we had available.

RaySafe Phone v4, created in February 2018

We wanted to keep our policy of regular updating and adding to our product range. We found and ordered marble and wood patterned and coloured vinyl sheets to further expand our product range. We also added the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8+, as well as offering customised RaySafe products for any phone that we do not have a ready made range of products for.

RaySafe Phone v3, created in January 2018

Here, we started to expand our product range using new carbon fibre coloured and textured vinyl sheets to make new RaySafe designs. We initially had these available in red, blue, black and white, but we decided to stop producing white carbon fibre RaySafes as market research feedback from trade fairs suggested that white was the least liked and least sold colour.

RaySafe Laptop/iPad v1, created in March 2018

After our successful RaySafe phone range, we wanted to expand our collection of available product to more electronic devices that emit EMF radiation, such as Laptops and iPads. We now make RaySafes for the iPad Air 1, iPad Air 2, and iPad 9”7 (2017) in our iPad collection, and for the MacBook Air/Pro 13”, MacBook 12”, and Chromebook 14 in our Laptop collection. These added collections mean that we now sell over 100 different variations of RaySafes.

Production

In early December, after a couple weeks of prototyping and negotiating with suppliers, we were finally ready to begin producing our EMF protective decals. All of our production takes place in our engineering workshop at our school.

We worked together as seamless production line, rapidly churning out perfect products. Some of the team mastered joining the vinyl and the EMF fabric layer, while others manned the laser cutter, in a way to waste as little material as possible.

Finally, each product was individually checked, and ones with even the slightest flaws were discarded. This gave us a solid base of 7 different products which we could sell over the Christmas holidays, before further expanding our product line once we returned.

We have recently upgraded to a new and improved vinyl printer which prints clean, sharp-edged RaySafe Decals which precision and speed. This has allowed us to cut new and improved RaySafes with different colours and designs
